Elizabeth Sorrel painted Tender Doves featuring a woman in a beautiful floor length dress holding 2 white doves. She practiced her art in the first half of the twentieth century. My version is painted on habotai silk, and measures 60"x11". At the middle of the scarf is a marker indicating the name and source of the design.
The scarf begins as white silk, with gutta resist in silver. Once the design is drawn on the silk it is stretched onto a frame where paint is applied. Resist acts as boundary to prevent paint from running outside the lines. The painted scarf is then steamed to permanently set the color and fuse the resist to the silk fiber. It is now color fast, and hand washable.
