Butterflies are so mesmerizing to watch as they visit flowers and rest on plants between flittering flight. I am blessed to have a garden that attracts so many butterflies. Monarchs also make their fall migration south to mexico and when they are coming through the area there are big flocks of them.
This scarf features large butterflies in traditional black and gold to red orange against a field of leaves created in a pointalist series of dots in shades of green. The scarf is habotai, a light weight silk, and measures 60"x11"
The scarf begins as white silk, with gutta resist in silver. Once the design is drawn on the silk it is stretched onto a frame where paint is applied. Resist acts as boundary to prevent paint from running outside the lines. The painted scarf is then steamed to permanently set the color and fuse the resist to the silk fiber. It is now color fast, and hand washable.
